Ripple and Privy push AI payments deeper into the XRP Ledger
Key takeaways
- Ripple has signed a partnership with Privy, a Stripe-owned company, to bring AI-driven payments and embedded wallets to the XRP Ledger.
- Developers will be able to build payment apps using XRP and Ripple USD (RLUSD) without users managing private keys themselves.
- Ripple says XRPL has processed roughly 13 million payments from AI agents, about 25% of activity on the network.
- The integration leans on the x402 payment protocol, which is designed for software-to-software transactions.
- Most machine-to-machine payments are small in value, so the volume growth does not yet mean large settlement flows.
What happened
Ripple announced a partnership with Privy, the wallet infrastructure company owned by Stripe. The goal is to integrate AI-driven payment and embedded wallet solutions into the XRP Ledger (XRPL).
According to Ripple's announcement, the integration lets developers build payment apps using XRP, Ripple USD (RLUSD) and other assets without requiring users to manage private keys themselves. Using Privy's programmable wallet technology, developers can create and manage wallets for XRPL, let users approve transactions, and embed crypto payments directly into their apps.
The partnership places a heavy emphasis on agentic commerce, a field where AI agents can autonomously hold funds, transact and pay for goods or services. Ripple says Privy will add more features as the integration continues, including transaction policy controls and fee sponsorship.
Market context
The deal centres on x402, an open payment protocol aimed at simplifying automated software-to-software transactions. x402 allows AI agents to handle payments for digital goods such as computational power, API access and AI model inference without manual transaction approval.
In practice, an AI agent could autonomously purchase a service, for example access to data, pay for it with XRP or RLUSD, and then receive the data. That model could position the XRP Ledger as a settlement network for machine-to-machine commerce.
Ripple has been building toward this for some time. In June it released an AI Starter Kit that allows developers to build autonomous payment apps using XRP, RLUSD and the x402 protocol. The Privy partnership extends that effort by adding wallet infrastructure that removes some of the friction around key management.
Why it matters
The scale of AI-agent activity on XRPL is already notable. Ripple says the network has processed approximately 13 million payments from AI agents, which currently account for about 25% of XRPL activity. RippleX engineering head J. Ayo Akinyele shared the update earlier in October. Automated transactions have grown from approximately 1 million in July to approximately 13 million in October.
That is a rapid increase in transaction count, but it should be read with caution. These are not necessarily large payment amounts. Most machine-to-machine payments deal with relatively small amounts of crypto, so the headline figure reflects frequency rather than value.
For developers, the combination of Privy's programmable wallets and the x402 protocol could make it easier to add automated payments to apps without building wallet infrastructure from scratch. For the XRP Ledger, it could broaden use cases well beyond crypto payments, moving the network toward serving as a settlement layer for software-driven commerce.
The open questions are whether AI-agent payments grow in value as well as volume, and whether developers adopt these tools at scale. The partnership signals Ripple's direction, but the size and durability of the market for agentic commerce remain uncertain.
